Haiti political crisis worsens, man stoned to death

Protesters in Haiti clashed with former soldiers in the capital, Port au Port. The angry mob stoned a man to death.

“As [Haitian President Michel] Martelly said, Guy Philippe was sent for, and he entered Port-au-Prince with the paramilitaries all dressed up in green, shooting at the people. We say it clearly, they also have in their corner the U.S. embassy, like that of Canada and France,” said a protester.

Eye witnesses said the deceased was accused of being a member of the unpopular army that was disbanded in 1995.

“They are shooting at us up to this very moment. Here we are, taking refuge. We will continue fighting. What happens, happens. We are standing in resistance,” another protester said.

The disbanded army gang stormed the capital parading the streets on pick up trucks and motorcycles.

The latest violence comes barely 24 hours after president Martelly announced he was leaving power on January 7.

The country’s political crisis is worsening with no immediate successor following the postponement of a presidential run-off last month.
